4 tips to stay hydrated this summer
We’re starting to get to the tail-end of the year. Yes, we know it’s also a super busy time of year but once Christmas is over it’s time to enjoy the summer. From beach days or simply enjoying a walk in the morning sun, everything we do we’re losing valuable water and with the added heat and humidity we lose water faster and don’t think that sitting in an air-conditioned shopping mall will help either. Air conditioners suck moisture out of the air as well as drying out your skin in the process.
So, to ensure you’re hydrated and happy this summer here are four easy tips to stay on top of your drinking game (no, not that drinking game.)
Drink water even if you’re not thirsty
Whenever you’re feeling thirsty it’s a sign that you’re already dehydrated. So, to prevent this you’d want to make sure you’re sipping water all day, every day. This helps constantly replenish the water you lose. Carrying a good quality water bottle around with you also helps achieve all day hydration.
Watch what you drink
Is it the “silly season” after all. Parties, catch-ups and end of season gatherings generally involve drinks that dehydrate you like alcohol and caffeine. Don’t get us wrong, we love a little drink here and there but just be aware that the more caffeine, alcohol and sugary drinks you drink will proactivity dehydrate you so just make sure you’re drinking plain water as well.
Eat water rich foods
Yep, that’s right the food we eat can also dehydrate you. Have you ever had a salty meal and crave a drink a few hours afterwards? Fast food or salt heavy foods can take away water from the body. Even just the process of digestion requires water to work. Eating water rich foods can aid in keeping you hydrated plus some fruits contain natural sugars to help keep you energised. Water rich foods include; grapes, watermelon, strawberries, celery, cucumber and tomatoes. Just to name a few.
Take a break
Whether you’re outside working in the garden or playing backyard cricket you’ll get hot and sweaty and lose plenty of fluid. Whatever it is you’re doing just stop and have a break. Find a shady spot under a tree or head onside and sit under a fan for a few minutes. If you’re body is saying rest, it’s best you do so.
By staying hydrated this summer you’ll have more energy to enjoy the holiday period!
